I'd like to change the icon that an AppleShare file server has for people who connect to it. I know that it is possible, I just don't know how. I'm assuming that I'll need an ICN# resource, but I can't find the one it uses. There isn't one in the AppleShare application, or the other files that come with it. I tried to change the ICN# in the AppleShare file and rebuild the desktop (just for fun), AppleShare had a new icon under the Finder and the Chooser, but server I connected to didn't have the icon, and then I started the server and other people connected to it, they didn't get the icon. I'm really curious, someone must have done this, right? I'd be grateful for any information. -Norman Franke nf0i+@andrew.cmu.edu

The icons for volumes seem to be stored in some mysterious hidden place. I've edited my finder file to change icons for the trash can, folders etc (now I use Icon Colorizer for color icons) but I could never figure out where the hard disk icon was stored. Someone recently gave me an INIT called Facade which replaces volume icons based on volume name. You can use RESedit to add as many icons as you want to Facade and use GetInfo to name the icon for the volume you want to replace. My hard drive is called "Black Hole" and I have a big swirling black hole icon for it. I have not tried Facade with AppleShare volumes but I assume it would work since it also works on floppies. You would have to install it for each user - don't think it would work on the AppleShare machine itself but you can try. E-mail me if you want a copy. ...!uunet!eplrx7!milbouma I would e-mail directly but replies to news always seem to bounce. Mark Milbourne -- The UUCP Mailer

In the case of AppleShare volume icons, these are obtained over the net by a call to AFPGetSrvrInfo (Inside AppleTalk page 13-95), in the case of hard disks the icon is obtained by a driver control call (Mac Technote #28). The icons may not be stored as ICON resources, which may be why they prove hard to find. But, in any case, these icons are not stored as part of the Finder. --- Gavin Eadie, Associate Director/Software Engineer The University of Michigan Computing Center 535 West William Street, Ann Arbor, Michigan 48109-4943 (313) 936-0816
