[comp.sys.mac] Reliability of tapes

cyosta@taux01.UUCP ( Yossie Silverman ) (10/29/89)

I am about ready to buy a new mac system (IIci) and am on the look for a backup
medium. I have been playing around with the Apple tape drive (and a mounting
driver) and it seems to be pretty good except for the time needed to read/write
the tape. The other options I see are diskettes (blech) and removable HDs.
Diskettes are out as I have had nothing but bad experience with them in the
past. They usually retain their data no longer than a few months. Removable
HDs are real nice except for their price. Tapes seem to land somewhere in the
middle. I could always squander the family fortune and buy a R/W optifloppy :-)
So, what I am askig for is recomandations and a short description of what YOU
use for backup/long term storage. Please answer to VSYOSSIE@WEIZMANN.BITNET
(as answering to this address is only sometimes possible) and I will summerize.

Thanks - Yossie
