[comp.sys.mac] FDHD Problem Summary

dweeb@norby.acns.nwu.edu (Phil Tracy) (10/31/89)

THIS IS A RE-POST. IF YOU'VE SEEN THIS ALREADY, PLEASE HIT 'N'

I posted this a few days ago, but it never got back to my own site. So
if you got it already, please ignore. If not, sorry for the delay. I'm
re-posting just to make sure everyone sees this who is interested.
Original post follows:
-----------------------

Well, here's the promised report on some of the FDHD problems.
For those of you who missed the original discussion, there
have been in the last couple of weeks several messages relating
various incidents having to do with the FDHD (floppy disk high density)
in the Macintosh IIx, IIcx, and SE/30.

I received a total of 18 responses over the course of the two weeks or
so of collecting responses. I received several right away, and several
are drifting at the rate of 1 a day still. I guess I'll still collect
them, and re-post if anyone's interested.

Here are the results, broken down by my own rough categories.

(1) 800K DISKS WON'T FORMAT, OFTEN AFTER USE IN FDHD --11 responses--
(2) HD disks work OK,. many DD fail --1 response--
(3) FDHD HAS APPARENT FACTORY DEFECT --2 responses--
(4) HD DISKS OFTEN FAIL, OFTEN WORK AS DD DISKS --2 responses--
(5) FREQUENT WRITE ERRORS, BOTH DENSITIES FAIL FORMATS --1 response--
(6) SE/30 TOUR DISK BAD --1 response--

I guess my conclusion is that there may just be a problem with using
800K disks in the FDHD, but considering the readership size of this
group, I don't think we can conclude that there's any sort of wide-
spread problem with the drive. Personally, I've only had 2 disks fail
to format in mine, one of each density. Category (3) is obvious--poor
unfortunate folks with a simple factory defect; subsequently corrected.
(if you're interested, the symptoms were mainly nasty whirring/grinding
noises)

I guess you can keep sending me info, if you haven't already. I formally
throw the topic open to discussion.
