[comp.sys.mac] PublicFolder Breaks AppleTalk Stuff

> [Discussion of how NCSA Telnet and Laser Printing breaks when PublicFolder is
 installed]

My thanks to those of you that responded to my earlier posting. As it turns
out, the GatorBox has nothing to do with my problem. The problem stems from
a trio of INITS - Responder, Broadcast, and PublicFolder. Any two of the
three work fine together. All three, though, cause NCSA Telnet and Laser
Printing to not work. Telnet says that the local host of gateway is not
responding, and printing aborts with the message "unknown error". I have
eliminated the possibility of the GatorBox being the culprit by attempting to
print to a local LaserWriter with identical results. Also, AppleShare via aufs
never has any problems.

*sigh* I guess I'll have to do without one of those INITs. Probably the
Responder...

I too had trouble which was eliminated by removing Responder.

Could someone tell me just what it does? (I know, it published your
Mac's identity to the network, or some such. What I want to know, is
what does THAT get you?)

(If answers come via e-mail I'll summarize to the group next week.)

	Thanks / JBL

My last reply got botched, so here goes again. I run Responder, Broadcast,
Public Folder, Dumper, and NCSA Telnet regularly on a group of Macs, with
NO (repeat, NO) problems. I run AppleShare client (to an aufs server)
occasionally on them (as well as Tops on one), and have never had any
problems with them (including printing). I suggest you check to see
if you have the latest versions.

Interpoll (Apple's network monitoring package) can query a Mac to find
out it's current version of the System, Finder, and LaserWriter, and it
need Responder to report back this information.
