[comp.sys.mac] TCP/IP to MACs?

pete@wlbr.IMSD.CONTEL.COM (Pete Lyall) (11/11/89)

Posting this for a friend... please respond to the address at the
base of the posting... thanks!

(actually, I'll also be happy to forward responses if that's
inconvenient)....

I would appreciate any input on connecting a Mac network to a
multi-system TCP/IP network (DOS PCs and Unix and other TCP/IP hosts).
Aside, a host is a multi-users system that is larger than a PC. I would
prefer to configure the MAC network running its own Local Talk and
connect to a TCP/IP network. A crude diagram of our configuration is:

 Phone lines - Local Talk __________ Ethernet -- TCP/IP

                                                      _|__ running TCP/IP
                                                     | PS | (Suns, PDP 11/750,
                                                     |____| PDP 11/44, Plexus)
                                                   Postscript
                                                    printer
                                                   other laser printers
                                                   with HP emulation

Our goals are:

1) All PCs and Macs share all printers on the network. DOS print spooling
handled using Ungermann Bass net BIOS (MS NET) and TCP/IP products.

2) All TCP/IP systems share all printers on the network. Print spooling
     handled by Unix spoolers.

3) File transfer from PCs to Macs to Unix and other TCP/IP hosts (or any
     combination thereof), using ftp.

4) Remote login capability to all PCs, Macs, and hosts (larger than a PC),
     using rlogin or telnet.

We are looking into:

1) Kinetics Fast Path

2) Ungermann Bass Access One

Does anyone have any knowledge, good or bad, about the above products? Can
your recommend any other products to meet our goals?
