[comp.sys.mac] White Knight 11.0

ksmith@jarthur.Claremont.EDU (Karl J. Smith) (11/09/89)

My copy arrived yesterday, and I was patient enough to read through parts
of the manual before playing with it. When I got around to trying to USE
it today, I ran into a problem: I can't get the VT100 keypad to work.
The arrow keys don't function properly, either.

I'm using a Mac Plus with a vanilla 6.0.3 system (my hard disk crashed,
<grumble> <grumble>), and the keyboard type is set to Mac Plus. I've
tried toggling the VT100 keypad and cursor key modes, changing to just
vt100 instead of vt102, telling it I had different types of keyboards,
and nothing has worked.

I even went so far as to use the 'Install Special Keys' utility to install
them to what they're supposed to be. It still doesn't work. The keypad
sends an ESC when 'Clear' is pressed, and numbers,=,/,*,-,+ etc for the rest.
The arrow keys either send nothing, or ^^^'s.

This makes it hard to use tcsh without arrow keys, or any editor, for that
matter. Posting news is fun, too since I have to use an editor at some
point. How did I manage it? Strangely, using the VT100 status bar works, if
I click the mouse in the appropriate box, I can type any keypad key, or
arrow key, and they work normally. Nothing from my keyboard works, though.
Has anyone else been able to get their keypad to work?

(Yes, I did see the blurb on p. 261 listing a solution to the problem
I'm describing. I tried all of those before I saw it, tried them again
after, and nothing works.)

Freesoft was made aware of the problem right away, they were working fine
and somehow they broke at the last minute. There is an updater available
on Genie in the Freesoft RT, however I am trying to distribute only one
update after perhaps more hidden problems are reported and fixed. So if
you have received WK and cannot live with vt100 keys..(they do work from
the vt100 status bar) I will try and mail the update to you. However it
would be easier to do it if you have access to GEnie...

I had the same problem with White Knight 11. I logged onto GEnie
to see if anyone else reported this. It is a known problem and a
50K difference file (1443 in the FreeSoft software libraries) will
convert White Knight 11 to Wk 11.01.
This has not been my only problem. Running the PUP decryptor which
comes in file 1443, my Mac Plus (running 6.0.2) crashed, corrupting
the copy of WK 11 I was working on. Finally turning off all my INITs
and booting in UniFinder got it to work. I didn't have the patience
to figure out just what was causing the crashes.
I've had other problems:
1. Master Juggler will hide the current application's windows when
switching in MultiFinder. WK's window won't hide.
2. The application that is supposed to convert settings from Red's
10.3 Stuff to WK format didn't work for me, so I had to configure
WK 11 by hand.
3. Just as I went to launch WK now, QuickKeys gave me error -9. Get
info on WK showed a file size of zero. (I was wondering where all that
extra space on my HD came from.) I had just done a DiskFit 1.5 backup,
so I'll have to go back and see if that hollowed out WK.
I'm sure more problems will be discovered.

Just option-click on the MultiFinder icon. This is the same as the SetAside
feature in Multifinder 6.1b7. It will hide all windows in the application
regardless of what the window is!!

Sounds like that first run in the updater may have damaged the file. Or
maybe you're having a QuickKeys problem. But I don't think that booting the
program would cause the file size to become zero! (Did you check the size
before you ran it by chance?)

DiskFit did not cause this problem with WK 11.01. DiskFit has been trouble
free for me up to now, and I'm sure it will remain trouble free. What did
hollow out WK remains a mystery.
