I'm probably going to buy a IIcx, but being a relative neophyte in the Mac world, I've got a few questions that I hope someone out there can help me with: 1) I want a 100-140Mb external drive. Some people I know have spoken highly of Jasmine, some of GCC, and fewer of CMS. Would I be best off just buying a 3rd party drive with a 5 year warranty regardless of make? What are your experiences and which drives would you recommend or disavow? 2) Is there any advantage (or disadvantage) to buying 80ns SIMMs, as opposed to 100ns ones? I've been told conflicting stories, ranging from "nothing better than 120ns can even be taken advantage of" to "80ns SIMMs cause a problem when mixed with Apple's 256K 120ns SIMMS, because their access times are more than 20ns apart." 3) I'm planning on buying the IIcx, a Portrait monitor with cards and memory to support 4 bits/pixel, a Deskwriter, 5MB total RAM, and a 100-140 Mb external drive. Main uses: writing, desktop publishing, graphic design (can't afford a good color monitor), and business/spreadsheet calculations. Does this system make sense for such uses? Excluding the hard disk and an extra 4Mb RAM, but adding the Apple extended keyboard, is $5600 a good price? That's the best one I've got so far. 4) For those of you in Massachusetts or New Hampshire: Except for the hard disk, I'm going to buy most of the stuff from an authorized Apple reseller in NH (no sales taxes). Computer Town and NEBA have so far impressed me the most; Computer Mart the least. Does anybody have opinions/experiences with these stores, or any others like Computerland/Businessland/Nynex, (both good and bad)? Thanks for your help. If people are interested, I'll post a synopsis of responses to the net. ..uunet!sli!steve steve%sli@uunet.uu.net Disclaimer: All opinions expressed herein are my own and not those of Software Leverage, Inc.
