I'm sure this question has been asked before, but I could find no reference to it in our archives. It seems that all the files which appear in comp.binaries.mac have been archived in the same fashion (i.e., all have the header --- (This file must be converted using BinHex 4.0) ). My question is: what software is required to restore these files and what is the procedure for doing so? Many of the files have been split into multiple smaller files. Which parts of these files are needed by BinHex (or other programs) to successfully re-create the original? Does a concatenation need to be performed before transferring from my Un*x machine? Again, sorry for repeating a question that MUST have been addressed before. New to this Macintosh xfer stuff, Dan

First of all, thanks to all who responded, though I had hoped the replies would go to the net so others might benefit... I didn't promise a summary, but will do so anyway. The basic reply I received was "Get StuffIt 1.5 or greater..." Take the file(s) from the net and edit them, removing everything above the line "(This file must be converted..." and any extraneous material below the last line of BinHex format data. (BinHex will end with a ":" on the last line) If a file has been split, rejoin them on the un*x side before downloading to the Mac, something on the order of % cat splitFile*.hqx > joined.hqx Transfer the file from un*x to the Mac using (choose your favorite transfer utility -- I use Binary XModem). Boot StuffIt, and choose the "Decode binhex" option, then select the decoded files and select the "Archive->Extract" button. Magic! The APPL/WDEF/CDEV/whatever file is now sitting on the desktop as a regular macintosh icon. Go for it! If the version of StuffIt is prior to 1.5, the step for decoding BinHex is: Boot BinHex, decode the file(s), then boot StuffIt and de-archive the resulting SIT! files... Again, thanks for the responses. Dan

StuffIt will find the data even if you leave things like news headers on. -- Mark Wilkins wilkins@jarthur.claremont.edu
