[comp.sys.mac] Public Folder 1.0 Woes...

glennr@sunray.UUCP (Glenn D. Rasmussen) (11/15/89)

I've recently set my machine up as a pseudo file server for a selected set of
files using Public Folder 1.0. On the surface, PF works wonders. It is very
fast and easy to use!

However...

I am finding that my file system is corrupted after someone copies files from
my machine. A reboot has always corrected the problems (ie nothing fatal yet).
Three examples:
1. MPW will stop running a script in the background. I cannot close any
temporary files opened by the script. I can quit and restart, however.
2. MPW and the linker. I use the -mf option, which will chew up all available
memory on the machine. Linker also opens as many files as it can. Usually a
reboot is necessary after this case.
3. Quitting MacTerminal corrupted my MacTerminal document. MacTerminal reported
   error -38 twice (fnOpnErr).

All this runs on a 5Mb MacII with colour. Yes, I run MultiFinder.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Humm, I have a similar configuration, spend > 90% of my time in MPW,
and have three PF's running on my machine...

Could you list the other INITs/etc that you have in your system? Maybe that
will provide the clue. If you send me email, maybe we can come up with a
solution.

[I would have kept this in email, rather than post, but I wanted to ask people
to PLEASE list the other INIT/CDEV/RDEV's that you have in your system when
you have problems. It makes it muchmuchmuch easier to figure out what's
wrong. Thanks!]

P.S. FYI: MPW is the ONE program that PF explicitly has to work around. It
turns out that MPW uses a special file system to handle i/o to its windows.
They failed to correctly implement the ASync version of PBGetCatInfo and
since PF runs in the environment of the foreground application - KAPLOWIE.

Apple was quite cooperative in tracking this problem down and recommended
a fix to me. THANKS APPLE!
