Does anyone know what the various tones mean? When one of our Mac II or IIxs comes up and it's unhappy about something, a different sequence of tones comes out of the system, instead of the single short _note_ they normally sound when they're first powered up and are happy.

The tones mean that you have a SIMM problem (one or more memory chips have gone bad). A good Apple technician can recognize the tones over the phone and tell you which SIMM in which bank is bad. A standard Mac technician will tell you to swap them out one at a time with known good SIMMs until you find the culprit. (A bad Mac technician will tell you the musical tones are an added feature of the Mac II line and you should sit back and enjoy them... :-) ) +--------------------------+-------------------------------------------+ | Stephen Fleming | My employer doesn't pay for this account. | | fleming@cup.portal.com | In fact, my employer doesn't even know | | CI$: 76354,3176 | I'm here! These indicate problems found by diagnostic routines. For an explanation, use the mac-ii-diagnostic-sounds application archived in SUMEX-AIM:/info-mac/sound/programs/ I've been told that _Inside Mac_ explains them but I can't find them either there or in the _Macintosh Family Hardware Reference_.
