Does anybody out there know of, or even better, recommend a particular fax modem for the Macintosh ? I've used the AppleFax modem and was not particularly impressed (both before and after the ROM upgrades) ... also, if you happen to love a particular piece of related software (i.e. BackFax, etc.) I'd be interested in knowing. The most recent MacWeek - 14th November - page 14 has an ad by Prometheus on their ProModem Data/Fax modem for $299. The picture show a modem hooked up to a Murata M1200 which printing out an incomming fax. The ad says MAcKnowledge is included and also mentions BackFAX but doesn't say BackFAX is included. I also saw that - so I called them up and asked what I thought was rather a stupid question i.e. "can it RECEIVE fax?". The ad does not mention reception anywhere. The answer was "No, Sir, send only." Beats me why they would do this. I am still debating whether I want to have something that can send only. After all, if you fax something somewhere, they may want to fax back a reply. On the otehr hand, yes they do bundle MacKnowledge and BackFax, the latter having received rather favorable comments in MacUser, August (I think). Each can be bought for about $120.-, so the whole deal may be even worth it anyway; Prometheus' 2400bps modem sells for about $199.- anyway, and for $100.- extra you get fax-sending and some software (potentially useful if you do buy a receive-also fax card soon). Does anyone have this 1/2fax-modem and care to comment on it? Does anyone have other fax-modems and care to give us their impressions, what they wish they had, what they don't care for much? If you can wait another month or so, there is a NEW entry coming to the Mac fax modem market. Fax send and receive (some are send only), and a 2400 baud modem, too, all in one. GREAT software, best I've seen so far. More stuff too, but that's all I can say right now. :) -R (who's using this product even as I type...)

I have an Orchid MacFax modem, FAX (send *&* receive) and 300/1200/2400 data modem. Well, to cut a long story short, it works - it comes with a *special* version of BackFax (which is customised to only work with the Orchid - nasty idea) and works quite happily with Versaterm and, yuck spit, Prodigy (not that I use it you understand). Cost is around $425 which is not unfair considering that it does deliver the 9600 baud Fax portion (4800 was not a sensible option for me with phone costs the way they are). I'm quite pleased so far, I have been told that it works with ATM, so goodbye 3* fonts - any other questions ?

Abaton will be releasing their InterFax 24/96 within a few weeks. It has a 2400 MNP 5 data modem and 9600 fax (send and receive). The software is exceptionally good. Together with ATM, I get superlative output. This is *not* an official endorsement, but I was one of the people responsible for our August fax modem Lab Report. Abaton's then-current product, the 12/48, was downrated only because of slow hardware. The 24/96 fixes this problem. I have been using the 24/96 in its various beta incarnations for several months now and am more than happy. When I was looking for a Maxfax modem. The best one was called MacFax by Orchid Technologies. It was a 9600 baud Group III fax and data modem, and it came bundled with BackFax. Granted the 9600 baud data modem is not V.32 standard (its V.29), so it can only talk to another Macfax or Applefax data modem, but from 300 to 1200 baud it can communicate with any modem.
