[comp.sys.mac] Color Video for SE/30

ls1i+@andrew.cmu.edu (Leonard John Schultz) (11/20/89)

Does Apple make color video card for the SE/30 for use with the Apple
RGB monitor? If so, how much does it cost??

Wouldn't this posting, and many others I have read today,
belong in comp.sys.mac.hardware??

Why did you guys vote it in if you just ignore it?

Okay, so anybody want to comment on why these boards are so expensive (except
the Micron). Are these all 8-bit, or are some of them 4 or 24?

Thanks,

The RasterOps board, at least, is 24 bit. I am not sure of many of the
others, although the Spectrum/8 is 8 bit and I suspect most others might be
too.

The reason they are expensive is that when you make a NuBus card, which
is what most are based on, you are aiming your card at the II, IIx, IIcx,
and IIci markets, which together are a much bigger market than the SE/30
market and requires major re-engineering effort.

Micron make their own chips (they are primarily a chip manufacturer and
I guess annoyed that almost no-one in the Mac community uses their VRAMs :-).

Some of the boards above (in the $900 range and, I think, the RasterOps
264, I'm not sure about the Generation X board) only support the 640x480
Apple color monitor [and maybe NTSC]. The more expensive ones ($1900 range)
support larger color monitors (around 1024x768).

The primary reason for price differences have to do with the number of
(expensive) VRAMs they need.

Does anyone have the Micron color board for the SE/30? Is it any good? Is
there a hidden catch?
