[comp.sys.mac] MacNFS

hjp@bambam.UUCP (Howard J. Postley) (08/27/88)

I am looking for an NFS (only client side necessary) implementation
for the Mac. I have looked at NCSA, U of Mich. stuff, Kinetics TCPort,
etc. All I can find is Telnet and FTP support. I need NFS. TOPS doesn't
do it at all. Anyone have any pointers? I know of at least 8 places
who are telling me "real soon now," which means 3-8 months.

Is there any wat to get the U of M stuff or does Apple have a lock
on it until Jan '89?

Please respond via email, I will summarize.

Thanks in advance,
//howard

In the university of Geneva, we are using a lot of SUNs and Mac (SE, II).
We are interested in using MacNFS.
All we know is that MacNFS has been developed by the Centre for Information
Technology Integration (CITI) group of the Information Technology Division
of the University of Michigan.

Has anybody any experiences (good/bad) with MacNFS, and/or the e-mail adress
of the CITI.

We want to know the cost of this software, if extra materiel is needed,
and so on...

Thanks in advance

A while back CITI created MacNFS so the Mac could use a standard NFS
server as an Macintosh volume. I understand Apple purchased the rights to
this product. What happened then. Where has it gone. Is Apple sitting
on it, or is it still caught up in legalities.

I would be interested in knowing a time frame for the release of this
product. Is it correct that it has been a year since CITI sold it to
Apple. Any idea when it will surface again.

If it is going to surface again, I would be interested in knowing how it
will be implemented. Will it be an RDev under the chooser like
Appleshare.

If there is interest, I will summarize.

It may seem petty, but I have to justify my salary!

I have talked to a test site for the product and he offered some
comments. Remember folks, you're getting these 3rd-hand.

  1. It is slow.
  2. It is buggy.

In other discussions on this net, people who know more about this
than I have stated that there are enough differences in the various
protocol layers as to make 1 to 1 mapping very non-trivial. I guess
this is a rather stilted way of saying that MacNFS is very hard to
write. There are several "judgement calls" about how a feature of one
filing system should be mapped to the other. Cayman seems to have done
it in there GatorBox. It's slow, and it crashes, but it works.
