A user brought this to my attention recently, and I'm trying to get an answer for him. It seems that the '`' (backquote) produces an overbar character on the screen and when printed on an imagewriter. However, when printed on a Laserwriter, the overbar appears over the next character (ie. if typed in position 10, on a LW it would print in position 11). Originally I thought that maybe this was a feature, but since it doesn't seem to line up properly over the next character, I sort of doubt it. I checked this out on an original LW, and also a LW II NT, just to see whether the revision of Postscript has anything to do with it, but the outputs of both were both the same. What's more, in the back of the LW II manual, where they show examples of all fonts, they don't even show an overbar. There is a ! (shifted 1), equivelent (shifted 2), etc., and ~ (shifted `), but no ` (which gives the overbar). I wonder if they also saw that there is a problem, and didn't even include it.
