This is unclear. Fonts that live in the LaserWriters are PostScript outline fonts, whereas the others are bitmap fonts for screen display. There *is* a difference between the Helvetica screen font that Apple ships and the one that Adobe ships. I prefer the Adobe version. >Will Adobe's Helvetica, Times, and Courier screen fonts look as >"good" on an ImagewriterII output as the Apple equivalents? They'll look different. "Good" is too much of a personal value judgement for me to answer this. >I have seen other adobe screen fonts that do not correspond to fonts >already loaded on our laserwriters. If I use any of these fonts, will >they just get downloaded to the laserwriter as bitmapped fonts (eg. >Garamond)? Unless you have the outline for the font in question, you will get a bitmap based on the screen fonts you have installed. >These Adobe "type 1" fonts that I have heard about, are they >available on any archive sites or listservers? I don't think there are any PD/ShareWare Type 1 Fonts available. All of them either come from Adobe or from Adobe's licencees and cost money. Adobe says that the Type 1 spec will be published Real Soon Now; then everyone can use the hinting technology in Type 1. Currently there are PD/ShareWare unhinted outline fonts (Type 3), but they won't work for ATM or any other application that requires the hinting that's in Type 1. >Or are these screen fonts that I have seen in fact "type 1" fonts? No. Screen fonts are bitmaps that are designed to be displayed at 72 dpi on a screen. Type 1 fonts contain the descriptions of character outlines; these outlines can be scaled as necessary by the PostScript interpreter (or ATM). As far as printing nice stuff on an ImageWriter, I'm not qualified to answer. I have a PostScript laser printer when I need one. :-) There are many others out there who bought ATM solely for the purpose of enhancing their ImageWriter output. The only non-screen application I've use ATM for is fax-modeming and I'm more than pleased with the results. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Stephan Somogyi MacUserLabs@cup.portal.com NetWorkShop Coord. or MacUser ...{apple|uunet|sun}!cup.portal.com!MacUserLabs The MacUser NetWorkShop - home of the LocalTalk backbone Any opinions expressed above are mine.
