Thanks to the folks who helped me out with Facade! There were a couple
of requests for me to post the instructions to the net. I suspect there
are even others who might be interested, so here are a few of the letters
I received.

Your question seemed to be the kind that would get everyone thinking
"Oh, someone else will answer that..." So, I thought I'd give it a
try.
Just put it in your system folder. Open Facade with ResEdit; open
the ICN# resource. You see a whole bunch of icons. Select the one
you want to be a certain disk (don't open it, select it). Hit
command-i, for "Get Info". Type name of said disk in "Name:", under
"Number:". Save, quit, reboot. Viola!
You can use this to replace the icon for your harddisk, or a fileserver
you use a lot, or, say, "Untitled", so all your blanks come up with the
same icon (I suppose they do that now, too :-).
Pretty simple, eh? The only minor drawback I've seen (and believe me,
my INIT setup has killed a few things in it's time), is that if you do
a "Get Info" in the Finder, your disk comes up with Facade appended to
the name. But who really cares?

Facade changes the desktop icons of disks by matching the disks' names
to the names of the icons. Hence you have two options: change the
name of your disk or change the name of an icon. You can change the
icon names by opening the facadeicons file with resedit, selecting the
icon in the icon picker, and doing a "Get info". (With older versions of
facade the icons were stored in the same file as the init...). Then be
sure that the init and the icon file are both in your system folder and

Ahh, Fac'ade. My favorite INIT, I was orginally using FaceLift
and had it posted on the net when I was at Apple, and the author of
Facade turned me onto it! But I digress, to use Facade put the Facade
INIT and FacadeIcons [sp?] file into your System folder. Then use
ResEdit to change the name of your favorite icon (or icn# ?) to the
exact name of your hard drive, or any mountable file system (i.e. a
floppy, HD, or network volume). Reboot, and your drives now sport
custom icons!
