It may *not* be true that 8 imagewriters provide more throughput.....

I don't know the details, but I would assume documents are documents: e.g. the number of bits that have to get shoved down the network is the same, roughly independant of the printers. And since the ImageWriters are so slow, they can all be running at full-tilt and still the network will be waiting on the printer. The above doesn't account for the overhead that each individual device inposes on the net. --scott -- Scott Truesdell

I have been using a Seikosha SP-1000AP for over 6 months now. I find it 100% compatible with a serial ImageWriter. It is also quieter than the ImageWriter. I have not had ANY problems with paper jamming. The only disadvantages that I have discovered are: Narrower carriage: Max paper width: 9.5" (8.5" with perf edges) Serial only: there is no AppleTalk option The exterior plastic appears to be more fragile than the ImageWriter's I have not thrown it across the room or dropped it to test this observation. The biggest disadvantage didn't get mentioned, though: It makes an Imagewriter I look like a Ferrari. It reminds me of the Epson MX-70 that I had for my Apple ][+ ages ago; very, very, very slow. On the plus side, it doesn't jam the paper (the tractor feed doesn't PUSH, it PULLS). If I were buying a printer, and couldn't afford a DeskWriter, I'd think real hard about the Seikosha, and a decent print spooler. -- Steve Dorner, U of Illinois Computing Services Office Internet: s-dorner@uiuc.edu UUCP: {convex, uunet}!uiucuxc!dorner IfUMust: (217) 244-1765
