[comp.sys.mac] Fullpaint & Deskwriter trouble

jacobson@uxe.cso.uiuc.edu (11/27/89)

I have a question about the Deskwriter and quick draw printers in general. I
have a friend who has a Deskwriter (I have one also) who wants to use it with
his paint package he got with his system. He has a SE with 20 MEG drive. The
paint package he wants to use is FullPaint. When he tries to print with it he
gets an error message that the "driver is not installed". Yet with other
packages such as his wordprocessor the Deskwriter does fine. Is anyone out
there familiar with Fullpaint??? Does it print in only postscript or some
thing else and thus not work with quick draw type printers like the
Deskwriter. I have never had any trouble with my Deskwriter and my own
paint package (Superpaint). I am going to try his paint package with mine
and see if I can spot the problem, but I was wondering if FullPaint does
something different than using the printer you have choosen in the Chooser???

FullPaint is one of the packages listed in the DeskWriter documentation
as being "incompatible" with the DeskWriter. FullPaint came (someone from
Ashton-Tate can correct me on this) as part of the deal when Ashton-Tate
bought Ann-Arbor Softworks, but A-T has never revved it (it's still on
1.0). The problem is that FullPaint only recognizes LaserWriters and
ImageWriters - which is all that existed for the Mac when FullPaint was
released. Asthton-Tate would have to answer any questions about upgrades/
fixes.

Addendum to above:
I just tried Superpaint on my friends SE system with his Deskwriter and
it prints just fine. Checked over the original Fullpaint disk and in its
system folder it only had imagewriter and laserwriter drivers, no other
special drivers were present.

I tried it and for some reason it just refuses to recognize the deskwriter
driver, and says "Error, driver not found" when I try to print. All other
software I use does not have this trouble with the Deskwriter, but for
some reason the Fullpaint program does. Its manual is no help and other
than explaining about putting the imagewriter or laserwriter drivers in the
system folder gives you no information on what it does to recognize the
driver for the printer you use.

This is a complete wild guess, but have you tried renaming the Deskwriter
driver to be Imagewriter? I don't know what that might break...

Renaming the DeskWriter driver won't do it - there is a resource called
WDEV that contains an ID # for the device and that is what applications
key on. Messing with this number is not reccomended, as it may not
help FullPaint and will definitely mess you up on many more commonly
used packages (e.g. Word 4.0) that look for the DeskWriter ID.

In the manual there was an update for all the applications that don't work
with the DeskWriter and FullPaint 1.0 was one of them. I'll type in the
rest of the list --

Full Paint 1.0
MacPaint (versions 1.4 and earlier)
Red Ryder 10.3
Microphone II (version 2.0)

The following don't print at 300 d8pi:

HyperCard 1.2.1
Illustrator 88 (version 1.8.3)
Digital Darkroom (version 1.0)
Image Studio (version 1.5)

The following doesn't use the DW printer's high quality fonts:

CricketDraw (version 1.1)

I'm not sure if any of this has changed or not since I got my printer.
Does anyone else know?
