How do you get the facade init recently posted to comp.sys.mac.binaries to work? I understand from the docs how it works but can't figure out how. Do you have to modify the VCB table manually (and if so where is it)? steve neruda

I understand from the docs how it works but can't figure out how. You add ICN# resources to the INIT, whose names match the names of the volumes you want to affect. When you reboot (might not be necessary?) then those volumes will acquire the icon you specify. -- Larry Rosenstein, Object Specialist Apple Computer, Inc. 20525 Mariani Ave, MS 46-B Cupertino, CA 95014 AppleLink:Rosenstein1 domain:lsr@Apple.COM UUCP:{sun, voder, nsc, decwrl}!apple!lsr

Took me a few minutes, but eventually I opened the init with ResEdit, and looked at the ICN# resources. You can add whatever ICN#'s you want. There are a few really nice included ICN#'s, like Calvin and Hobbes. All you need to do is choose an icon, and change it's name to the name(s) of your harddisks. Then reboot with the init in your system folder. Alternatively you could re-name your harddisk(s) to a name already given to one of the icon(s). (I renamed my harddisks Calvin and Hobbes...) I could see no way other than resedit to determine what names were given to the icons installed in the init... Using ResEdit, open the Facade file and create a new icon along with the others already present in the file, or choose one of the ones the author conveniently provided for us (I use Hobbes, the tiger). Select the icon, then choose Get Info from the File menu. In the Name field of the info window for this icon, type the name of the diskette, hard disk, AppleShare volume, or whatever, that you want to bear the icon you've selected. Make sure you get the name exactly right. Close the Facade file and quit from ResEdit. Reboot your computer. Assuming Facade has no trouble loading, you should now have your disk on-screen with its new icon! You can have a different icon for each disk, as long as you give the icon resource the name of that disk. What *I* want to know is, why won't Facade work on the 512K Macintosh that's on the same network as my Mac II? Could it be that Tops is loading before Facade? If that's the problem, is there a way to change the order there? I have no idea why Tops gets loaded first, unless rdevs always come first. What I'm hoping to do is get Facade running on this 512K Mac so that when the hard drive on the II comes up on the 512 under Tops, it has the same icon I've given it, rather than the Tops published-volume icon. -- Mark H. What you do to make Facade work is go in with ResEdit and find its ICON (I think) resources. There were a whole bunch in the one I got, yours maybe different. To make it use one of them for your disk, select it (there will a thin black box around it) and then choose "Get Info" from the file menu. This will bring up a box with a whole bunch of stuff in it, all you want is the name (top box), type in the name of your disk and close, save changes and then reboot. You can also add icons with ResEdit (or modify existing ones) and then name them to your HD also. That should get you started. Enjoy. Mark Cookson

If for any reason you don't want Facade to load on a particular bootup, you can hold down the mouse button and the "failed Facade" icon will appear instead, and your hard disk icons will be whatever the driver wants them to be. I discovered this by accident while holding down the mouse while booting so that TMON wouldn't load (so that Deluxe Music Construction Set would run-- I *hate* copy-protected software, and DMCS just reboots [without even unmounting volumes] if you run it with TMON loaded. Grrr!) ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Disclaimer: I don't have an employer so opinions expressed are mine. >How do you get the facade init recently posted to comp.sys.mac.binaries >to work? You can create/edit icons to be assigned to your volumes with the ICON Designer by John A. Nairn. This is a shareware program designed to create, edit, and delete icons with both ICON and ICN# resources. I have found this much easier to use than ResEdit for such purposes. ICON Designer can also be used to create HyperCard icons. In order to assign an icon to a particular volume, the icon must have the same name as that volume. For example, if the volume is Mac HD, then the icon name must be Mac HD. John A. My compliments to the programmer of Facade Init. Such a small program,
so many nice possibilities. I really enjoy this init. All my frequently
used disks have their icon... And I even have an appropriate icon
for the MS-DOS machine that's hooked to my Mac thru Tops ;)
Anyhow: I understand this program is shareware... But in the docs
there's no reference to this whatsoever (at least I couldn't find it).
What's the status? Would the author settle for a bunch of diskettes
sent from Holland? A sixpack of Dutch beer?

It looks like Facade is a hit by the amount of replies it has generated to a question on how to set it up. Anyone noticed yet that it inserts its name and creator in every Get Info box? Anyone got ideas on getting rid of it? Okay everybody - I've got an easy one: I just uploaded some great INIT's and CDEV's from SUMEX, but one of them didn't come with any DOCS!!! It's called Facade and from what I can tell, it looks like it can redefine icon's used for HD's and Disks. Unfortunately for me I cannot figure out for the life of me how to get the thing to work! I'm running System 6.0.3 on a Mac SE/30 w/ 40M HD. Any suggestions?? The others run great! (i.e. Black Box, Freshstart, and WindChooser - add a NeXT touch to things...) While I'm on it, I'm looking at purchasing a Mac for myself (my roommate would like to use his SE/30, too!) I'm thinking about either a IIci or IIcx. In either case I'm gonna go with the RasterOps ColorBoard 264. Any prob's with either one or considerations I should make either way??? Send me any info you can - Thanx! <<<<<<<------------Michigan Tech: Where the men are men and so are the ---->>> <<<<<<<----------------------------women ----------------------------------->>>

If you ever name a disk with the same name as one of these ICN#s, it will take on that icon (next time it is redrawn). You can add and subtract your own. It's a little buggy. I've never had a crash because of it (that I'm aware of), but it can add gibberish to the "Get Info" window of a file on a floppy whose icon has been changed.
