[comp.sys.mac] New Jasmine Trade-in policy

cuello@uxh.cso.uiuc.edu (12/03/89)

For those of us unfortunate enough to have purchased Jasmine HDs during the
terrible year of 1988, Jasmine is offering a deal worth examining. They are
offering to exchange the damaged drive for a new, double-capacity, 2 year-wa-
rranty drive (including new versions of the 10MB of stuff they bundle) at
a price "below their manufacturing cost". In my case, they are exchanging
an Innerdrive 45 SE (with a damaged platter assembly) for a brand new (?)
Direct Drive 80. The low price for the exchange is US$199.

Now, what do you guys think of this deal? Is this one of the strategies that
Jasmine is pursuing to woo its unsatisfied costumers, or is this just a way
to recycle the returned-damaged-and-now-repaired HDs of previous months?

I hope to hear from you soon, for I think this is a most tempting offer.

That all depends on what mechanism they use in their 80. If it's a Quantum,
forget it. If they use a Seagate or other unit, then the deal is worth
investigating.

Does the Jasmine trade-in DirectDrive-80 have a quantum mechanism? 8-)

Now, wait a minute. Quantums are faster, quieter and have had a better
record (Apple's bad batch notwithstanding) than Seagate over the past
year. Than any other drive manufacturer other than Imprimis.

I have heard of *none* of the problems that Apple's batch has had
happening with other, non-Apple Quantums. Third Wave, a major reseller
of Quantum-based drives, has reported a less-than 1% return rate.
