[comp.sys.mac] Printing mailing labels with Deskwriter, MS Word 4.0

Q8N@PSUVM.BITNET (Scott D. Camp) (11/28/89)

I am having a problem getting Word 4.0 to print 3 column mailing labels.
The problem stems from the fact that Word instructs you to set up a page
height of 1" in page setup. However, the Deskwriter page setup does not
allow you to adjust the page size in this manner (you only get to choose
one of the preset choices such as US letter, US legal, etc.). So what
happens is that Word prints the first three labels across the top of a
page, ejects the page, prints the next three labels across the top of the
new page, etc. (There is also the associated problem of not being able
to print to the top of the page on a Deskwriter, so following the default
instructions in the Word manual, you loose most of the text that would
appear on the top lines of the mailing labels on the top row of labels.)

Has anyone come up with a workaround for these problems (or am I simply
missing something?). If not, are there any good label programs that
work with the Deskwriter? (Since I really don't do much printing of
mailing labels, I would obviously prefer Word to be able to handle my
Deskwriter, or should I say my Deskwriter to handle Word?)

You can e-mail me replies if you wish, but since I read the newsgroup
fairly regularly, postings there would also be fine. I'll be glad to
summarize any direct mailings. Thanks.

In fact, printing mailing labels anywhere on
the page using a deskwriter and MSWord 4.0 is easy.
Do this:
==========================
REPEAT FOR (needed) EACH ADDRESS on page
select address, (possibly containing
           mailmerge-variables, (use NEXT statement))
Menu: edit-position...
give a fake value to the position,
(for example horiz. 1 inch relative to page, vertical dito)
END REPEAT
Menu: File-Print Preview
click on reposition-tool (whats its real name?)
reposition the addresses anywhere on the page
(by dragging m, doubleclick in margin to see result)
do the mailmerge-shuffle
done.
==========================
Hope this helps!

Your page - eject problem posibly stems from
format-section-start, or manualy inserted pagebreaks.
