My sister needs the ability to design a custom font. In particular, she needs to design a set of phonetic symbols to describe the pronunciation of words in an extinct North American Indian language. There are several sounds which don't appear in English, so she needs special symbols. I seem to remember hearing about this capability on the Mac. Can anyone tell me: 1) What program can be used to do this? 2) Can an existing font be used and then modified (i.e. so she doesn't have to re-design a whole alphabet but, say, could take Times Roman and modify it)? 3) Can the custom font be used easily in existing Mac word processing or page layout programs? 4) What about hard copy output? Does she have to design a separate screen font from the one which is used for laser output? (And could she output with good quality on a high-resolution device, e.g. 1200 d.p.i.)? 5) Failing any of the above, does anyone know of the existence of fonts which might do the trick? E.g. fonts with loads of pronunciation symbols? Or, as a long shot, does anyone know of other people working in linguistics with Macs or PCs? Any information anyone could give me on this subject would be much appreciated. Thanks, Tim Shea Sorry, I don't read this newsgroup. Please reply to me directly at: shea@edson.East.Sun.COM.
