[comp.sys.mac] Falcon on the IIci

sharp@ksi.cpsc.ucalgary.ca (Maurice Sharp) (12/03/89)

I have been told that Falcon does not work on the IIci. This is
disconcerting since I am getting one. Can anyone tell me if there are
updates ? Are they free, if not what do they cost ? Yes I am a
registred owner.

	thanx in advance

The jet fighter flight simulator Falcon 2.0 will not run on any
machine sporting a 68030 processor, including the Mac IIcx, the SE/30
and the IIci. I too am a registered owner and just upgraded from an
SE to an SE/30 only to find that my favorite F-16 would no longer fly!

A phone call to the program developers (Spectrum HoloByte,
415-522-3584) informed me that an '030 upgrade may be available within
a few weeks. So don't bail out yet!

That's odd, it runs quite well on my SE/30. I talked to the salesman
at the Boston MacWorld Expo and he told me to call Spectrum. I did so
and about a month ago I received an upgrade. (Then another copy, for
some reason.) They also included a bill for $3.00, which I promptly
paid. I suggest you call them again ...

Spectrum Holobyte has said that the version 2.2 update (available either this
month or next) will fix the compatibility problems.

Update policy is the same as always; if I remember right, it's send in your
original disk with $3 (or something like that).

Funny, I've been able to run Falcon 2.0 on my Mac IIcx (5 Mb, 40 Mb HD,
video set to 2-bit B/W). It takes some playing around with, and the
craft moves AWFUL fast, but it does work.

Of course, if you do manage to get the '030 upgrade, please notify.

Falcon 2.2 has just been announced. It will run on a 68030 Mac. I believe
the upgrade involves sending in Falcon Disk 2 and $3.00 to Spectrum
Holobyte. You might give them another call and get the exact details on
the upgrade. It also contains some bug fixes of interest to all current
Falcon pilots.

Yes, the upgrade is indeed available (I just got off the phone with them).
But I am not at all pleased with the folks at Spectrum Holobyte. I talked
to them when I first tried Falcon on my SE/30, and again about two months
later (which was about six months ago). Both times I gave them my name and
address and was assured that they would notify me when the upgrade was ready.
Now I find it's been out for a month and they never bothered to tell me!
A pox on your house, Spectrum Holobyte!

Nope, it definitely does not run on the ci. And I'm none too
happy about it either.

Not necessarily true. I have a friend who *does* run Falcon 2.0
on his SE/30. I'll have to ask him how he does it.

Do let us know if you get the upgrade. I'll have to call them,
too. And color, dammit, I want color! :-)

Just called them, and it has been released. To upgrade your version of
Falcon to Falcon 2.2 (which should work on all '030 SEs), mail in the
following things to Spectrum Holobyte:

1) Check or money order for $3.
2) Your Falcon Disk 2
3) A note asking them to upgrade you to Falcon 2.2.

Mail it to:

I got a $3.00 upgrade a couple of weeks ago (2.1 or 2.2?) that runs well
on my SE/030 at home. 2.0 definitely wouldn't.

Now, this upgrade wasn't working on a IICX I have at work. I haven't
tried 2.0 on the CX, but actually I wouldn't be surprised if it did work.

I think the problems with 2.0 on the SE/030 were more related to mapping
of the display memory; - it ran, but was so ugly (flashing, blinking, etc.)
that it was essentially unplayable.

As far as the CI goes, well who knows. I've heard of one that won't
recognize our network exactly every other time it is rebooted.

I just got off the phone with Spectrum HoloByte and the new Falcon
update DOES fix the compatibility problem with the new Apple 8-bit
video card. Since I didn't see this bug mentioned in this group,
I thought I would add the info. This may or may not be the
problem that others are experiencing with Falcon 2.0. It sure
was for me, because I have a Mac //, and 2.0 wouldn't work!
