[comp.sys.mac] Formats for scanned images?

I am interested in where I can find the specification of formats for 
images scanned in by the popular scanners for the the Mac.  What I 
really want is a list of formats, what scanners produce what, whether they
support color or not, what the specification of the format is.  I want to 
write some s/w to analyze the format.
