I am planning the automation of a number of administrative functions for the Law Society, including Bar Admission Course student records and course registrations. I have never put together a database before. I will definitely be using one of the standard relational database packages (Mistress, Informix, Unify, Ingres, etc.). I have access to various reviews, both from the net and published, so I'm not looking for any more information on which one to get. Question: should I be doing any general reading on database management before starting implementation? I will of course read the manual for the particular DBMS thoroughly, so I'll know what it can do, and I have plenty of experience (9 years) in UNIX and C. I also know exactly what I'm trying to get the system to do, and I'll have vendor technical support if I have questions about how to get the DBMS to do what I want. I do know the very basics about a database system, like what records and fields are. Given the above, if you think that background reading in DBMS would be useful, I'd appreciate any recommendations of titles.
