I am running Word 4.0 on a Mac Plus with 2.5 Meg RAM. System 6.0.3. Also I am running Multifinder. Here's the problem: I use Word 4.0 to edit different sets of documents, so for each set I have a different Word 4.0 settings file. I keep these on the desktop, and then whichever set of documents I have to work on I use its corresponding settings file to startup Word. Until last week this worked fine. Then I downloaded Temprament 2.0 and installed it. Now the following happens: When I power up the Mac and select one of my Word 4.0 settings files I get a message that the application is busy or cannot be found. Okay, how about if I just try to open a Word document? Same problem. But I can open Word directly and then read these documents. So, I looked at the files using "View by type" and the Word files all have the type field set to "About Temprament"!!!! As soon as Word 4.0 is opened the type field shows up correctly for all the files. It appears that sometime during the development of Temperament the programmer accidentally copied a version of the INIT resources into the resource fork of the documentation file, and set the bundle bit on the document. The extra resources shouldn't do anything, even if you happen to leave the documentation sitting around in your System Folder, since only certain types of files are searched for INITs, but the messed up bundle bit confuses the Finder and makes it think the About Temperament document is actually the appropriate application to open when Word documents (or settings files, in your case) are double-clicked from the Finder. This causes the problems you noticed. Solution: Use ResEdit, DiskTop, etc. to unset the Bundle bit on the About Temperament document, and the problems should go away. They did for me. You could also use ResEdit to remove the extra resources from the document, but this is not really necessary. Barry Eynon barry@playfair.stanford.edu -ARPA ...!decwrl!shasta!playfair!barry -USENET
