[comp.sys.mac] Help transferring file hierarchy UNIX --> Mac

barrett@jhunix.HCF.JHU.EDU (Dan Barrett) (12/12/89)

If anyone can help me, please send E-mail -- I don't read this
newsgroup.

I need to transfer several hundred files from our VAX (running
UNIX) to a Mac. Some of the files are straight ASCII text, and some are
binary data.
I also want to preserve the directory (drawer) hierarchy of the
files; that is, I want the same hierarchy on the Mac as on the VAX.
How can I do this transfer? I am not really Mac-literate.
I do *not* want to have to watch this transfer (like, type in each
file's name as it is transferred, or specify "binary" or "text" for each
file).

When I transfer directory hierarchies between my Amiga and a UNIX
system, I just use the program "zoo" which packs an entire directory
hierarchy into a single, compressed file. Is there a version of "zoo" for
the Mac?? Or maybe "tar" and "compress" for the Mac? Or ANY
packing-compressing program for the Mac that also runs under UNIX?

I have access to Red Ryder version 10.?. I have been totally
frustrated trying to transfer these files, mainly because the Mac insists
on assigning a file "type" or "application" to every file I transfer.
UNIX files don't HAVE any "application"... what if I just want a verbatim
data transfer?? I don't want my plain ASCII text files turned into
"MacWrite documents", especially since they are C programs that should
not have formatting characters inserted into them!

Any help appreciated! I have already exhausted all the local Mac
gurus who tried (and failed) to answer my question. E-mail only, as I don't
read this newsgroup. THANK YOU!!!
                                                        Dan

I am also interested in some of the same issues--from unix to Mac--and
would be interested in seeing the replies. I do read this news group.

There are versions of tar and compress that run on the Mac. I've been
able to sucessfully unpack a tar archive on the Mac, but I wasn't able to
uncompress the file as well. So I end up uncompressing on the VAX and
running tar on the Mac.

The only problems occure when the tar archive contains 2 files in the same
directory that differ only in capitalization. Then program refuses to
extract the second file because of a name conflict. You also get errors
if there are links between files, and the error reporting isn't very good.

But overall, the process has been very sucessful for me. Both programs
should be available on Info-Mac.
