I'm looking for recommendations for inexpensive 2400 baud modems. To give you some background, we currently carry the Anchor 2400E modems, and we have had extremely good experiences with them. They have a 5 year warranty, and our return rates are on the order of 1% (and in my modem experience that's extremely good); our informal "noisy-line tests" leave them unfazed. So what's the problem? Rumor has it that Anchor is in chapter 11 (they are; I called to confirm it) and a 5 year warranty isn't much good if the company might not be around. I also wonder if the quality might not slip if they are resource-constrained. So, I'm looking for another alternative. If my fears are unfounded, then tell me so... I'd like to hear that most, since we have been satisfied. We have recently looked at the Prometheus 2400mini modem, and, despite a $14 lower cost, we were quite disturbed by the shoddy workmanship (e.g. rattling connectors), poor documentation (clearly written for a modem other than the modems they sent us), and no external volume control (though the documentation said it was there). I have nothing personal against Prometheus... if our experiences are the exception, rather than the rule, please let me know. Right now we're looking for other possibilities, in case Anchor does not pull itself through. I have not evaluated the Zoom modem, but several of our clients have complained to us about them. I'm willing to be open-minded, but we're looking for reliable, well-made equipment from a reputable company that will be with us for a while. -- ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- - Chuck Bartosch chuck@memory.uucp - - BAKA Computers, Inc. ...!batcomputer!memory!chuck - - 200 Pleasant Grove Road chuck%memory@tcgould.tn.cornell.edu - - Ithaca, NY 14850 607-257-2070 - ----------------------------------------------------------------------------
