I know everyone out there in netland is looking for an NFS implementation for the Macintosh family of computers. Well you'll be glad to here about what I recieved in the mail the other day. It was a several page glitzy brochure about an NFS and ethernet product for the Mac II, the SE and the SE/30. The software supports NFS, TCP/IP, Appletalk, and something they call Netware. The only problem is that it can only be used with their hardware. :-( The name of the company is below. Ask for Larry Benson, the Northeast Regional Manager. Cabletron Systems P.O. Box 6257 Rochester, NH 03867 (603) 332-9400 Our company has dealt with Cabletron for several months and they seem to be very reliable. They manufacture a large variety of ethernet hardware including a lot of equipment that is OEMed by others like Inmac. If you have any of Inmac's transceivers they are really made by Cabletron. They also install network hardware. Now if I could just convince my management to spring for another ethernet board..... ================================================================== ... ... . . . . Joe Laughlin . * . . It does bad enough things on our Suns. From what I have been told NFS for the mac is slow and has lots of bugs. If you want to share files and printers you are MUCH better of using ushare from IPT. No I do not work for ushare, but I do use it, and it works, fast and well. It also works on the Suns, Apollos, and a few other platforms. Mostly, it is stable and not buggy. maurice Maurice Sharp MSc. I can think of a lot of reasons why you'd want NFS on a Mac, particuliarly if you are going to hook up your Mac(s) up to a Sun especially. Maybe you're running a pre-4.0 version of SunOS, I know that causes a lot of problems with NFS inspite of the fact the protocol is standard. Why would somebody want to run a pre-4.0 version of SunOS? Simple, there's a bit of software out there that won't run on SunOS 4.0. Don't ask me why some vendors don't upgrade their software or take it at a snail's pace to do the upgrade, but they do. Not only do I want NFS capability on the Mac, I'm about ready to yell at SCO for not making it available for Xenix especially after seeing that the Xenix-Net developer's kit has TCP/IP and the BSD socket library. Now something's not quite right here, the developer's kit has everything you need to develop NFS, but SCO hasn't done it yet and the official rumor I've heard is that they never plan to for Xenix. // JCA /* **--------------------------------------------------------------------------* ** Flames : /dev/null | My opinions are exactly that, ** ARPANET : crash!pnet01!jca@nosc.mil | mine.
