Here is a list (although brief) of the music rags out there.... ::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: ! "All the news that fits we print." ! ::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Jazz: Down Beat - Discussions of jazz records, etc. It's still primarily concerned with jazz, but also covers various things on the fringes, including various "fusion" musics, the "new music" (the December 1983 issue has an article on Philip Glass), and some of the more serious/interesting rock music. Folk: Sing Out - THE magazine for people who listen to folk music and those who play it. Keyboards: Keyboard - It covers all aspects of keyboard music: rock, jazz, classical, other; piano, synthesizer, organ; equipment, technique, artists (profiles, interviews, discographies); reviews of equipment, recordings, sheet music, books; the music business. Guitarist: Guitar Player - interviews, discussions of guitars and players. Guitarist: Frets - Not really sure. Probably pretty close to Guitar Player, although probably centers more on the instrument. Misc: Music Sound Output - for `serious' musicians. Punk: Class War - A British publication mainly concerned with Oi and Skinhead music. They dislike Clash, Sex Pistols and Ramones. Punk: Punk - Reviews of Bands, record deals, etc. (Color posters of Wattie or Beki Bondage) New Wave: Trouser Press - deals with the NEW music. For most of these I can get the subscription addresses. Write if you want them. Thanks to: Prentiss Riddle for "Sing Out" and "Down Beat". {ihnp4,seismo,ctvax}!ut-sally!riddle Randy Hudson for "Keyboard", "GP", and "Frets". {harpo, decvax!cca!ima}!inmet!rgh Morris M. Ever wonder what Eliot Carter, Mutabaruka, Gamelan Music, Psychic TV, and the Meat Puppets have in common? A truly wonderful magazine that deserves mention is `OP'. They specialize in independent labels and non-mainstream recorded music, in particular thirdworld, industrial noise-music, avant garde classical, jazz, country and western, hardcore, metallic punk, ambient, folk, rockabilly, and international traditional music. Noticeably absent is music on money crazed labels like Atlantic, Columbia, RCA, DGG, Warner, &c. Each issue has hundreds of reviews, frequently by readers, and articles that focus on part of the alphabet -- for instance, they did `T' in october and discussed Throbbing Gristle, Tibetan music, Toots and the Maytals, Mark Tucker... (but NO Talking Heads since they receive enough exposure elsewhere). Also included is plenty of info about where to locate such diverse music -- long lists of allied publications, organizations, radio stations, and especially mail order addresses. You'd be surprised how often weird music can be found for a nominal charge or even FREE! In case you hadn't noticed, the DIY (do-it-yourself) movement is currently generating a huge amount of absolutely wonderful music that few people ever bother to listen to. It's obviously in the big record companies' interest to keep a small manageable group of prepackaged `stars' if the listening public is idiotic enough to keep coming back to eat that shit... -michael

Conspicuous by their absence from the previous list: Musician (formerly Musician Player/Listener): To me, at a level slightly below Music/Sound/Output in seriousness, but still rather good, focusing on some obscure facets of the music world, and always just this side of laughing at the so-called music "industry" (unlike punkier rags, they are not quite so eager to bite the hand that payolas them) New York Rocker: alas now defunct, but I hear Boston Rock is still around. Is it still worthwhile?? From a former NYRocker subscriber... -- Rich Rosen pyuxn!rlr
