I just purchase an SE/30 with 40MB hard drive and I love it. It's sleek and fast... Anyway, everything was working fine until I started it up under MultiFinder. Suddenly, I could hear a very high-pitched, barely audible whine coming from the Mac. Upon doing some testing, the whine stops when I hold down the Mouse button (such as a selection box in Finder) or bring up any dialog box or DA (ie Chooser). This noise does not occur when MultiFinder is not running (ie just using Finder). I am using a fairly standard system (nothing to wierd software wise). Also, I installed an extra 1 Megabyte RAM using 4 256K SIMMS giving me 2 Meg total. Why is it doing this?!?!?!? Any comments/suggestions are welcome. Thanks, ross rc3h@andrew.cmu.edu

I get it too! Is this a problem? I'm gonna call the dealer soon! However, the high pitch (unnoticable unless you take notice) doesn't seem to have a pattern for me. It toggles on and off with mouse clicks and keyboard keys being pressed. Sometimes if I hold the mouse button, the whine will start, at other times it will stop. It's starting to bother me! I just got this! I happened to notice, I have a Quantum hard disk. Could it be the hard disk? Are the Quantum hard disks that Apple is shipping with the SE/30 all new drives with no problems or are they "fixed" versions? Help! --Willi

I too have noticed a high-pitched whine, both when the SE/30 had an external hard disk and when an internal hard disk was installed. Not everyone can hear it (my wife cannot and doesn't understand why it would bother me). My configuration has 5MB of memory, and is otherwise rather plain. I've tried taking out all of my INITs, without effect on the whine. Anyone out there have any ideas? Thanks, Michael (Michael_H_Naber@cup.portal.com)

Anyone out >there have any ideas? This is only an idea (ie. a guess :-) based on something I read in the hardware manual that I received with my LaCie 40M quantum external drive. Apparently, there is some kind of "ground" or "static strap" of some kind inside the drive that can produce a "whine". Whether or not this is the whine that you are hearing, I havn't a clue but according the breif explanation in my manual, the fix involves slightly bending this strap (or what ever). Anyway, you DID only ask for an IDEA! :-) Hope this one helps. -- Jeff Wiseman: ....uunet!tellab5!wiseman OR wiseman@TELLABS.COM
