[comp.sys.mac] UNIX-to-Mac Mailers

lehotsky@osf.org (Alan Lehotsky) (12/18/89)

Does anyone know of a Mac Mail program that supports connection to the
unix world? Ideally, it'd be a reasonable Mac program. I used the old
version of MicroSoft Mail and it was terrible!

There appear to be several new mail apps available for the Mac, any info
about them would be appreciated. You can post to me and I will
summarize if there's sufficient volume and interest.

Thanks,
Al Lehotsky

Probably the cleanest way to do this would be to use the existing uucp
protocols for file transfer and mail (almost every unix machine
has uucp). I posted uupc for the mac (LSC4.0 version with upgrades for
a working email interface (line oriented - sorry) aliases, timeout
variable in systems (L.sys) sequences and more), to comp.binaries.mac about
4 weeks ago and have not heard if it has even been received by the moderator.

A worthwhile project for some enthusiast out there would be to modify
some existing nice mailer to produce uucp spool files for uupc
to send - any takers - what a superb university project (hint hint).

Al,

We are now getting ready to implement a combination of two packages here at
Mentor Graphics. The Macintosh mail package is QuickMail from CE Software.
There has been a group of 15 of us that are using it right now. Much, much
better than Microsoft Mail. For connection to the Unix, world, we are using
Mail LInk*SMTP by StarNine software. All of my mail, Mac as well as Unix comes
to my QuickMail mail box on the Macintosh. Macintosh users can use the
forward, reply, and enclose options with Macintosh as well as Unix mail. I
would highly recommend these packages!!

P.S If all goes well, all 400 Macintoshes at the Corporate Headquarters will
be using this package.
