They've got something up their sleeve that won't be ready for January, but will be by April. So the REAL question is: WHAT? What is Apple going to spring on us come April? System 7.0? Mac III? The 33-MHz 25 MIPS beast rumored in the latest VAPORWARE column (see c.s.m.digest)? Let's get them rumors flyin'! Actually, the April date for the San Francisco MacWorld has been advertised for many months, since long before the quake. The explanation I heard involved Moscone Center being booked during January. It may have something to do with the major construction going on at Moscone these days. -- Hank Shiffman (415) 336-4658 Marketing Technical Specialist Software Engineering Technologies ...!sun!shiffman Sun Microsystems, Inc. shiffman@Sun.com Zippy sez: I invented skydiving in 1989!

Dear Rob - Without commenting on product introductions that may or may not occur, or may or may not be planned, I have to clear something up for you. Apple does not decide when the MacWorld Expos occur. In fact, if you realized how little pull we have with Mitch Hall and Associates, the folks that put on the MacWorld Expo, you would never have made this asserition. The story that I have heard about the change in schedule is very simple: Mitch Hall and Associates forgot to sign up with the Mascone Center for their usual date. When they realized this, the first available date was the current one. Nothing sinister here. I think that this situation points out something that should be taken into account when examing things that happen in the MacWorld, and in the world in general. Quite often it is something totally inoccent that people try to interpert into something with sinister implications. Maybe you should go back and think about the Eric Drexler quote that you have for you signature. -- Jordan Mattson UUCP: jordan@apple.apple.com Apple Computer, Inc. I've known about the April 90 date since late spring. Mitch Hall, the show's promoter, was reported to have made a booking foul-up and that April was the earliest available date. One interesting rumor that circulated through the developer community at the time of the date change was that the show was delayed so that System 7.0 would be available. Marsh Gosnell

It was neither Macworld nor MacWeek; we lost two people :-( The rumor that I heard about why April had to do with Moskone already having been booked several years in advance for some real estate agents conference or something in that vein. Apparently April was the best other time that they could get. This is, of course, purest rumor-mill material and may not have any relation to the real reason. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Stephan Somogyi Even if you win the race, you're still a rat. They didn't think that it would be a problem getting the Moscone Center in January and didn't bother reserving it in time, and the boat show took the only slot available. As someone who'e been to several expos as an exhibitor, and experienced this "management" style first-hand, I'm not the least bit surprised that they screwed up the scheduling.
