[comp.sys.mac] Mac IIcx startup problem, not disk

fulk@cs.rochester.edu (Mark Fulk) (01/02/90)

I run into this one nearly everytime I leave my Mac IIcx plugged in but off
for a few hours. Pressing the boot button on the keyboard, also the button
on the back of the CPU box, does nothing. The monitor shows nothing, there
is no sound from the disk drive, and the fan doesn't even start up. The latter
convinces me that the problem is not with the disk drive (a` la the recent
80HD stiction/whatever problems). Unplugging the machine for a few minutes
(roughly a no. 1 bathroom visit) usually fixes things. Sometimes this has
to be done twice. The system:

Mac IIcx CPU,
4MB Tech. Works 70ns. RAM in bank 1,
1MB original RAM in bank 2,
Quantum 80 internal hard drive (bought from MacLand),
Rasterops 264 video card,
Magnavox monitor,
Datadesk 101 ADB keyboard,
QuadLynz trackball (sometimes, problem occurs without it),
ProComm 2400e modem from Olmos (usually off when problem occurs).

The whole is plugged into an Arrow spike filter; not the best, but something.
There is no evidence of power outages to the house.

Incidentally, the Rasterops card displays its own screen (company logo
and nice shaded colored rectangle) at startup until "Welcome to Macintosh"
appears. When the problem arises, this doesn't happen either.

Putting a floppy disk into the internal drive doesn't make any difference.

My sense is that some flip-flop that controls a power switch is getting stuck.
Any ideas?

Thanks,
