[comp.sys.mac] America Online, Tao, possible virus

fulk@cs.rochester.edu (Mark Fulk) (01/03/90)

I recently downloaded Tao (Tao ain't Othello) from America Online. It
is a rather weak computer Othello game, with some nice features that make it
easier for my 5 year old to play it (and she normally beats it, 40-24 or so).

I didn't play it much, but just yesterday (Jan 1) my daughter got into it,
my wife got into it, and I played several games just to join in. Then
something bit us...

The mouse button stopped working right. Specifically, clicking and
menu dragging only worked on every third try. The problem did not stop
when we quit Tao. Rebooting fixed it. Sometimes we could play Tao a few
games before it bollixed the mouse. On one occasion, I started Tao up
when the problem was active; after that, the mouse button worked only every
twelfth try!! A little later, the factor went up again; I stopped counting
as I clicked away, gave up, and rebooted.

This problem only arose under Multifinder; it seemed at times to be triggered
by clicking in a non-active region. The counts are exact; that is, click n
worked iff n == 0 mod 3.

Disinfectant 1.5 (latest version from comp.binaries.mac) found nothing;
there were no INIT or WDEF or DRVR resources in the APP; there were
two CODE resources.

Anybody got any ideas? The behavior seems a bit deliberate to be a bug.
Is Tao taking revenge on us for beating it?? The author has it print and
speak some rather obnoxious phrases when it loses; perhaps he had it patch
the event handler too.
