[comp.sys.mac] Need help buying a new system

elmore@glacier.UUCP (Bob Elmore) (01/10/90)

After having to use DOS systems for several years here at work, I've
decided to buy a Mac for home. I have a few questions on outfitting
my new system. First, let me ask that you excuse silly
questions. As I said I have been forced to use DOS systems at work
with very little exposure to Macs.

The reason I am asking these questions here is that to each of the
following questions I've gotten conflicting information from dealers.

So far, I have decided on an SE with 20mb hard disk and 1mb RAM. I am
also leaning toward the HP Deskwriter Printer.

1. I want a full page monitor and I'm leaning toward the Radius.
However, Radius is the only brand I see on dealer's floors. Is this
monitor okay? Any problems with it?

2. The RAdius literature states their video system is "Fully compatable
with Radius Accelerators for the Mac Plus and Mac SE. ANd that the
"Installation of the accelerator is allowed by the Radius Magic Bus."
What does all this mean? Since the SE only has one expansion slot I
want to be careful with this valuable space.

3. I have become pretty good with WordPerfect (DOS). What is this software
like for Macs? The various articles I've read in magazines and elsewhere
never seem to talk much about it one way or the other. One feature I do
like about WordPerfect is its ability to create a document on your Mac
and edit it on your DOS system (and vise versa) without the loss of any
formatting. Opinions please, on WordPerfect for the Mac.

4. I'm looking for a simple Word Processor for my kids. PFS Write comes
to mind. Do they make this for the Mac? Anything else out there that
might be just as easy ?

5. The kids also want a Paint/Draw program. What is good?

Thanks in advance for any help you can offer. I'm sorry for the length
of this, but the abundance of BS out there is driving me nuts!
