[comp.sys.mac] IIci slowdown?

dave@lsuc.on.ca (David Sherman) (01/09/90)

My IIci behaves strangely at times. Every once in a while
it slows down by an order of magnitude or so. I notice it
in several applications, so it's not just the application.
The machine gets slow enough that it won't even keep up with
fast typing; when I stop after a string of characters, it
will suddenly catch up.

Rebooting always clears this problem. Does anyone know what's
going on, and if there's likely to be a fix (hardware fix?)
down the road?

I'm using a IIci with an internal 40Mb drive, a portrait monitor
(but not using the grey levels), 5Mb of memory, MultiFinder and
System 6.0.4. A co-worker with the identical setup but a colour monitor
also has this happen fairly often.

From the sound of it, you may be experiencing a case of the wdef virus.
It is supposed to slow down and/or crash IIcis. Try running Disinfectant
1.5 to check for and eradicate this virus.

Do you have the 1meg and the 4megs on the proper banks? Check the user
manual for detail. Does your IIci slow down under finder of
Multifinder? Are you running too many things, on the back ground?
Check the " About Finder " under the apple to see how much unused memory
you have left during the problem. I would generally put batch downloads
on the background, and on the fore-ground I will play a game (Tetris in
color is my favourite) with continuous sound. When ever the incoming
data needs to be written to the disk, there will be a slight pause in
the sound.

I am sorry, without any further info I am unable to help you.
