[comp.sys.mac] Help, my mac has gone flaky!

jlaurent@marketing.UUCP (Jim Laurent) (01/13/90)

Recently for no apparent reason my SE has gone flaky.
This problem may have shown up in the group before, but I am
a new reader and haven't had time to review the 40000 previous
articles.

After booting up the Mac if I double clic on the hard disk, its
name turns to a '*' and the window opens. Now if I open something
else that name turns to '*' and so on. If I back up and rename
everything to the original the system continues to work fine until
I reboot again. Then the whole procedure start over.

If I single clic on the hard disk, '*' start filling the name area
until a box comes on telling my name has exceeded 31 chars. After
I hit return and rename the hard disk everthing is OK until I
reboot.

Is this a virus attack? Has anyone an explanation?

Can't duplicate it on my non-ADB Plus, but it sounds like your "*" key is
stuck. Try rebooting with the keyboard unplugged. Do NOT plug or unplug
your keyboard with the juice on. Not sure about SE's, but this has been known
to fry Mac II's motherboards. -Russ
