While trying to get the Background Folder trick to work, I created a stripped-down System Folder containing only MultiFinder 6.1b9, Finder 6.1.4, System 6.0.4, and Background Folder [Finder 6.1.4 and System 6.0.4 are from the System Software 6.0.4 release. Also, my machine is a IIci if that matters.] Now, I can put all kinds of applications in the Background Folder, but the only one that the system will start is Backgrounder, Apple's print monitor daemon. It appears that the System is configured correctly, because it finds Backgrounder. What I cannot figure out is why the system refuses to launch the other applications in the Background Folder. Any ideas? One other thing: If I rename any application in the Background Folder to Backgrounder, then the system will start that application. So it appears that the name Backgrounder is special.
