[comp.sys.mac] High-Density floppies

mjkobb@mit-amt.MEDIA.MIT.EDU (Michael J Kobb) (01/12/90)

Hi,

Does anybody have any advice on which brand of HD floppy to buy, and where
to buy them? 47st. photo carries Kodak 3.5" HD floppies for $24.95, but I
don't want to buy them if they're going to die after a few months...

Thanks,

A mail order company that I've used for a while as a good source
of DS/DD floppies (their failure rate is no higher than brand
names) is now selling DS/HD high density disks at $0.89/disk in
lots of 25. Their DS/DD 3.5" disks are $0.49/disk in lots of 25.
Contact:
	MEI/Micro Center

I haven't tried their DS/HD disks yet.

Hmmm... the cheapest I know of is a company called MEI/Micro Center. I've
ordered over 100 DS/DD disks from them very cheaply. They are now selling
3.5" HD disks for $0.89 each in lots of 25. Shipping is $.50 per 25 disks
and handling, processing, etc. is $3.00 per order. Labels are $1.50 per pack
of 50.

All in all, an order of 50 disks with 50 labels will cost you $50. Not a bad
price, eh?? Or you can go with BRAND name Sony in boxes of 10 DS/HD for $23.45.
I have had absolutely no errors with any of the disks I've purchased. The
company is fast, reliable, and friendly.

What's the number? 1-800-634-3478 in Columbus, Ohio
              FAX (614) 486-6417

Enjoy the savings...
P.S. The prices on disks have been going down monthly. Obviously from all of
the business that this company brings in.

I've bought over 200 regular DSDD 3.5" diskettes from MEI/MicroCenter.
The first thing I do is format them all, and sometimes one or two out
of 100 fail to format.

But they're guaranteed, and MEI/MicroCenter gives you no hassle.
Just call their 800 number, tell them how many were bad, and they send
you free replacements. They don't ask you to send the bad ones back.
(What makes me laugh is that they'll usually send a replacement disk via
UPS in a big cardboard box of styrofoam peanuts instead of just popping
it in a mailing envelope!)

In short, there's little risk in buying their diskettes. I'm a satisfied
customer.

Where to get HD Floppies? IMHO, the *ONLY* place to buy floppies of any
sort is MEI/Micro Center (1-800-634-3478).
Though I've never purchased the HD disks, I went in with some other folx
and bought 300 DS/DD 3.5" disks... to date, not a *single* disk has
failed.
I'm very satisfied with the quality... shipping was a bit slow, but hey..
for the price, I can live with it... and the price?
DS/DD $0.45 each (that's $4.50/box)
DS/HD $0.89 each (that's $8.90/box)
I don't see HOW you can go wrong. Call them and I'm sure they're send you
one of their catalogs. I just got a new one a couple of days ago, so
those prices are current. Hope this helps.
Geoff.
