[comp.sys.mac] Wingz upgrade

bannon@andromeda.rutgers.edu.rutgers.edu (Ron Bannon) (11/14/89)

I received my free WingZ 1.1 media upgrade in the mail today. This upgrade
was unsolicited. The upgrade included 3 disks and an order form for the
documentation which cost $37 total. If you're a registered user you should
also receive this upgrade.

I have an educational version of Wingz 1.0. Back in November, when the
upgrade to 1.1 was announced, I called Informix about the upgrade. They
told me that I would receive the upgrade within two weeks. Well, this is
middle of January -- little longer than two weeks as they promised.

So has anyone who has educational edition of Wingz 1.0 get upgrade to
1.1 yet? Or Am I the only one who still uses 1.0?

Thanks,
Chang

Don't feel like the Lone Ranger; ALL of us educational-edition types are
waiting for the 1.1 upgrade yet, as far as I know.

According to Mad Mac News (our users' group newsletter), Informix told
Jean Mickelson (one of our members who phoned them) that since the
"end-user" version was released two months before the educational
version, the end-users' upgrade disks would be shipped first, too.
Informix said the educational upgrades would be shipped "first quarter
of 1990...perhaps the first month."

I guess we'll just have to be patient. I don't think they've forgotten
us, at least.

I spoke with Informix on the telephone on Jan. 15. They told me that they
didn't know when the educational upgrade was going to ship, but they could
mail me the domestic version. I asked them to kindly mail me the domestic
version. BTW, I didn't ask them what the difference was between the ed. and
domestic versions. Also, I do know of one user at another site from mine who
received his "educational" upgrade over a month ago.

Maybe someone else can make sense of all of this

Well, I just called Informix to find about it. I told them that I own an
educational version, and they told me that while educational version 1.1
is unavailable, they would ship the regular version to me. I have
nothing against that! After all, only thing that educational version
differs from the regular version is the startup script, which I can
modify it at will.

So, if you own Wingz educational edition, call Informix to place an
order for version 1.1.

Don't know about Informix (hi, Mike!), but we have to put a different
copyright notice in our ed. versions. Doesn't sound like much, I know,
(and it's not a big deal for development, of course), but it makes it
one more different version of the product that has to be tested,
certified, produced, and shipped... hence the delay. "There's many a
slip 'twixt the cup and the lip"...
