[comp.sys.mac] help - mac hardware error?

gadkari@giza.cis.ohio-state.edu (S S Gadkari) (01/19/90)

I have a Mac Plus and GCC FX/20 Hard drive.

I had a pipe freeze - burst - ceiling cave in over my Mac. Apparently (i was
not there) the Mac itself seemed undamaged and started up fine when I
turned it on next. Now, it intermittently gives me system errors on
startup (id = 02, which I believe is an address error) and once the
screen froze and a blank 'system message' style window appeared while
I was using a spreadsheet... I replaced all my system files from the
Master disks and the problem persists - a month after the cave in.

A) Can I correctly conclude that this is a mac (not drive) hardware error? If
not, is there a simple way to find out?

B) Is there anything I can do before handing over large sums of money
to a repair shop in terms of fixing or diagnosis? I have a reasonable
understanding of the organization of a Mac but no hardware test
equipment - and the last time I played with circuits was in Junior
Year engg labs.

c) Was it a mistake to NOT buy the wonderful extended warranty? Should
I do so on future Mac / computer hardware purchases?

Please reply by mail. Thanks a ton!
