[comp.sys.mac] Weird stuff with WindowChooser 1.12

thewho@portia.Stanford.EDU (Derek Fong) (01/18/90)

I have some interesting yet very strange things happen with WindowChooser
1.12. Does anyone know how to get in touch with the author(s) of the program?

Anyways, here's a list of things:

1) if you boot up with the CAPS LOCK key down, then the darn thing does not
work. With caps lock off, it loads no problem. (I found this out randomly.)

2) it conflicts with Excel 2.2 in two ways:
   a) it does not work or activate with Excel. Doesn't bother me, but....
   b) This is the weird one: while running Excel help under multifinder, the
window does not show up. Why? I'm not sure.

3) it conflicts with Superpaint 2.0.
Again, it has the problem with multifinder. iF you run Superpaint with
Multifinder and Windowchooser, when you try to open a file, it reads it in,
but you can't see the window!! (you can load tons of different files in, and
choose which one you want to view, and it gets "checked" in the menu; however,
no windows are present on the screen. Totally weird to me.

HAS ANYONE ELSE EXPERIENCED ANY OF THESE PROBLEMS? IS THERE A LATER VERSION
OF THE CDEV BEYOND 1.12 WHICH FIXES SOME OF THESE BUGS. I DON'T REALLY MIND
THAT CERTAIN PROGRAMS DON'T RECOGNIZE WINDOWCHOOSER, BUT IT IS CERTAINLY NOT
PRACTICAL WHEN IT DISABLES WINDOWS ALTOGETHER.

Anyways, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Oh, my list of things I would like to see in a newer version of WindowChooser
(or future version suggestionsI):
1) further enhancements to make the NeXT windows closer to the next. Maybe
changing the shade of the scroll bars too to match the top of the window.

2) Have the shrinker feature option on the NeXT window (I like Eric's best).

3) fix the bugs I mentioned above....

Okay, that's it.

Thanks in advance.

Quicken 1.5 won't close its windows when WindChooser 1.12 is installed. Neither
clicking the close box nor using a Quickeys command alias will do it. Really
annoying on a plus with limited screen real estate.

Talk to me. :-)

This is a feature, not a bug. The Caps Lock check also works when opening
windows; it can be used to "fix" the below problems. I failed to document
this feature. Whoops.

Totally weird to me.

Me too. I recently got access to Excel 2.2 and will look into it. If I can't
fix it, I'll think about making it fall back to the standard window under
Excel 2.2 and in general under SuperPaint 2.0.

Tons of people.

Not yet.

Not only is it not practical, but it is not deliberate.
That's life in the big city. I'll look into it this weekend.

By the way, use any more CAPS and I'll have to send the CAPS POLICE after you.

That's out of WindChooser's control. Perhaps I could hack it to pretend to be
AltCDEF as well. We'll see.

If you like the Shrinker feature, then what you want is AltWDEF. I have tried
to post AltWDEF to comp.binaries.mac more times than I have fingers, and I
get no response. (And the damn commercial demos continue to appear; why?)

In progress.
