[comp.sys.mac] Finder Sounds Flakiness

mjkobb@mit-amt.MEDIA.MIT.EDU (Michael J Kobb) (01/21/90)

Hi!

I downloaded the init "Finder Sounds" from America Online, and I love the
ability to play sounds when certain finder events (ESPECIALLY emptying the
trash) happen. However, I find that the CDEV that controlls the init doesn't
seem to work reliably. I turned off the zooming window sounds because they're
too startling through my powered speakers, but they come back every now and
then. The check boxes in the CDEV still indicate that they're turned off.

Has anybody else had this problem? Is there any known init or application
incompatibility? My system: Mac IIx, 5Mb, LaCie 105Mb HD, System 6.0.4,
Finder 6.1.4, Multifinder 6.1b7, a stack of inits (init cdev 2.0, Vaccine v1,
AntiToxin INIT, Sound Master, Color Arrow, Color Finder, Dimmer, Finder
Sounds, IconWrap 1.2, Logout 1.0, Master Strokes, Mouse2, OnCue, Pop-Keys,
Rear Window MF, Sroll Limit, SCSI, Smooth Clock, Suitcase II 1.2.6, SuperClock
3.1, SuperVideo, WindowList, Boomerang, DeskPict, Randomizer, SUM Shield
INIT).

Any ideas?

Thanks,

If the sound code can't read the resource in Finder Sounds Config for any
reason, it uses its default setting to play the sounds. It tries to read those
settings whenever it is initialized (either during a Finder launch or when the
Finder is switched into the foreground). I imagine that the code wasn't able
to read the settings after coming into the foreground when you observed the
flakiness. I'm currently working on version 1.1 to add a couple of features
and fix a couple of shortcomings. I'll try to fix that confusion at the same
time.

I have also turned off the zooming windows sound after I installed it, but
I haven't had it turn itself on. But what has been happening to me is sometimes after a finder operation finishes, the desktop will clear itself <windows
disappear as well as the disk icons and trash can> then reappear instantly
again. Only thing is after that happens, there aren't any more sounds.
Doing things that should cause a sound cause my hard disk like to blink
<like its loading the sound as it normally does> then my menu bar blinks.
Opening chooser shows my volume level where it should be, but still no
sound. If I play something through sound edit, I'll get that, but when
quit that and return to the finder, there is still no sound. Rebooting
cures it, until it happens again.

Could anybody post this critter? Or is it system-you-can-copy-but-can't-post-it-ware?

Would love to have it installled in my machine...

Waaaaaaa! How come my version of Finder Sounds won't attach a sound to window
zooms? I have version 1.0.2. It will attach sounds to opening and closing
windows, but not zooming. Is there a newer version available?

BTW: I've noticed that in MultiFinder (I use 6.1b9), the window resize sound
refuses to play on my SE/030.
