Has anyone seen these symptoms before? The 20meg drive (Apple) in a friend's SE has been acting strangely. About 3/4 of the time it refuses to boot, i.e. the Mac just never recognizes it. If you boot off of a floppy, the hard disk access light will flicker for about 30-45 minutes and then stop flickering completely. The hard disk is never mounted or recognized. When the disk does boot everything is fine: no bad sectors, no data lost, nothing wrong. The pattern of boot/no-boot is very "bursty", it appears to work fine for about a week, and then doesn't boot at all for several weeks. We've tried lots of things when it doesn't boot (multiple resets, lots of warmup, shaking and slapping (ala the Quantum 40M problem), cursing) and nothing appears to work. Has anyone seen symptoms like these? Can you suggest any possible cure (other than replacing it)? many thanks, mike -- Mike Carlton, UC Berkeley Computer Science ~ carlton@ernie.berkeley.edu ...!ucbvax!ernie!carlton Manana
