I'll echo James Edwards's comment about this being a keyboard problem. With me, it's related to static electricity. If I rise from the couch and come back, very often I start getting a stream of characters when I just pick up the keyboard. Just tried it, and you can create a new folder with a key held down. The "Empty Folder" name is selected, so the stuck key starts filling the name, and you get into the loop you described until the key is released.
