[comp.sys.mac] Alternate editors under MPW

shap@delrey.sgi.com (Jonathan Shapiro) (02/05/90)

I'm utterly fed up with the editro under MPW. Does anyone know how to
replace it? I would be happy to write an editor that had the right
interfaces, but the fact that I need to reach for the mouse for every
typo that I notice on the next line up is making me crazy.

Well, PrEditor is supposed to work with MPW, but I don't understand your
problem -- the arrow keys will move you around without going for the mouse.
If you have the Extended Keyboard (or the third-party equivalent), the
Page Up, Page Down, etc all work as well.

I have been reading in comp.emacs that MicroEmacs 3.10 has been successfully
ported to the Mac. I think that Earle Horton did the port (sorry if I'm
wrong, Earle) and it was done well. I do not know the archive site that
it's located at (I want it too!). It has not been meshed into the supported
distribution of ME yet but the authors will probably do so by the next release.
If you like VI instead, there is SteVIe, a VI clone. Source is available.
I don't know if it's been ported to the Mac.

Jon, I have MPW 3.1 and agree with you. I'm used to Brief on DOS and Crisp
1.9 on Unix and would choose Emacs over the MPW editor any day. They should
put a nice C or lisp-like macro language into it so we could customize it to
our liking.
