In case anyone else is interested: The main lead I got was to grep-wc-12.hqx at sumex-aim.stanford.edu. Unfortunately, this program only sees MacWrite files and text files. I'm not sure what version of MacWrite it is set up for, but unless you have it, you have to save your file as text to get a correct count. The program seems to have a lot of UNIX-like functions but doesn't come with documentation. Somebody else mentioned wc.hqx, also at sumex. I downloaded it, but I didn't get a launchable application so I don't know what it's for. A few people mentioned that Word 4.0 counts, but it is apparently very slow. It seems I'm not the only one nostalgic for some of the useful and well-implemented features I had available on CP/M machines. My hazy recollection is that Magic Wand gave you the word and character count as a standard feature. Steve Goldfield
