I've asked about this before (with no response), but the problem persists, so here we go again: I'm using a Mac SE (20MB disk, 2.5M RAM) with MS-Word 4.0 to print medium-length documents (5-20 pages) that frequently contain small bitmapped graphic images (mostly portions of screen dumps, sometimes MacDraw images) on a LaserWriter Plus over an AppleTalk network. I'm running System 6.0.3, and the LaserWriter printing resources are version 5.2. The problem is that about half the time one of the following problems surfaces: 1. I can't print the document at all--the printer just hangs with no error message, or 2. I can print part of the document, but the printer hangs after a few pages, or 3. I can print the document, but some of the graphic images may not print at all. I have tried removing all INITs and cdevs, reinstalling all the system software and printing resources, all to no avail. The problem appears to be intermittent, because documents that didn't print one time sometimes print normally at another time, with no changes made. I realize there isn't much you can tell me with no more than this to go on, but it would console me to know if anyone else out there has experienced similar problems. If so, what (if anything) have you been able to do about it? -- +===========================================+============================+ | Doug Heacock, Academic Computing Services | heacock@kuhub.cc.ukans.edu | | The University of Kansas, Lawrence, KS | heacock@ukanvax.bitnet | +===========================================+============================+

If you are printing under MultiFinder, either allocate more memory to Word or run under the Finder. If you are running Print Monitor, turn it off. Actually, in this case, I'd suspect a network problem or a memory problem with the LaserWriter. There are some jobs that are too tough for the LW+ to handle. You might try "Grouping" any MacDraw images before you paste them into Word.

[Description of Word 4 printing problems deleted] >software and printing resources, all to no avail. There were a couple of 'weak' nodes in the Phonenet network in my old office. The weather seemed to have something to do with it! We had a good technician come in and add resisters in the right places -- presto, no more mysterious problems. Might be worth a try Craig Treleaven --- * Via ProDoor 3.1R

Here's something to try when printing fails on a document containing bitmap images: turn off the "Faster Bitmap Printing" feature in the Page Setup dialog. You'd never guess, but that's what it's for! David Casseres Exclaimer: Hey!

I think Doug's problem (and now mine too, of yesterday!) is due to Word 4 mucking around with PICTs, as reported in the Word 4 bug list recently posted to comp.binaries.mac. It's item 42i on page 5. What do others think? (Author: David Sachs, Edition: 3/11/89.)
