[comp.sys.mac] AppleShare, applications busy/not found if app. folder closed

In comp.sys.mac, article <10541@pucc.Princeton.EDU>,
  IRWIN@pucc.Princeton.EDU writes:
< Anyone know why the following is happening?
<
< When I double-click one of these documents, it will open as long as
< the folder containing the parent application is open on my desktop.
< If the folder containing the parent application is closed, I get an
< 'application busy or missing' message. This appears to happen consistently.
<
You have to rebuild the desktop on the hard disk the application is on.

To do this with the AppleShare file server, startup the _server_ with the
installation disk, holding down Command and Option until the "Do you want to
rebuild" dialog appears. Click "Yes".
Make certain that on the disk you start up from, there is at least a System,
Finder, and "Desktop Manager". The DT Manager should be version 2.01 or above,
just as your AppleShare file server.

You may want to install the DT Manager on your local hard disks too, and
repeat the above procedure (copy the DT manager into your System folder,
reboot, hold down keys, click Yes). Your "updating desktop file" messages will
show up for half a second instead of half a minute.

As to the cause of your problem -- no idea. Did the server crash some time in
the past? Did you copy a damaged application to the server?
There may be other reasons. In my experience, this problem does not show up
often, however.
